Welcome to Two Boats School.  I hope that you find our website interesting and informative and can use it to find out as much as you need to about our school.  If you would like to know more please contact us at enquiries@tbschool.edu.ac

At Two Boats School, we make excellent provision for the educational needs of all children aged 3-16 on Ascension Island.  Our class sizes and exam success would be the envy of most schools around the world.  Although this is a state school maintained by the Ascension Island Government, it has many features of a British International School and affiliate membership of COBIS.  The school enjoys strong support from the island community and a parent group with the high expectations indicated by their decision to move here to work with their families.  Ascension has no permanent population so the majority of our pupils are St. Helenian British with significant minorities from mixed and UK backgrounds.  We have a committed and supportive staff team from the UK and St. Helena.

A recent review of the school found:

•             The overall educational experience is good, the school is successful in its aims

•             Achievement of pupils is good overall and excellent in the primary sector with outstanding outcomes  in Foundation Stage

•             Assessment is accurate with teachers knowing well how each child is progressing

•             Pupils with special educational needs make good progress

•             The quality of teaching is good in the secondary sector and excellent in primary, with examples of excellent practice seen in both parts of the school

•             Marking is almost always excellent

•             The good personal development of pupils is supported  by well-structured programmes and a range of activities and opportunities

•             Pupils reported very little unpleasant behaviour and were confident the school would sort out anything that did occur

Of course, there are some areas to work on as well.  We know that we need to review the secondary curriculum to offer languages and performing arts, and keep trying to provide more clubs and activities.  We also need to make more opportunities for independent work, developing initiative and resilience, make all opportunities challenging and ensure that staff share their good practice with each other.  We have made a good start on addressing these issues.

I started as Headteacher at Two Boats in February 2012 after 16 years in a number of different roles at comprehensive schools in North and East London.  My own children attend the school and we have all enjoyed every moment of our time on Ascension so far, and look forward to challenges ahead with enthusiasm and confidence.

In the most positive way possible, this job is like no other, and this school is like no other.  And the pupils are amongst the most well-behaved, caring, assured and engaged that you are likely to meet anywhere.  Whether as prospective pupil, parent, member of staff or interested observer, I commend the work of Two Boats School to you.
